Social anxiety may disrupt the empathic process, and well-regulated empathy is critical for navigating the social world. Two studies aimed to further understand empathy in the context of social anxiety. Study 1 compared individuals with elevated or normative social anxiety on a measure assessing cognitive and affective empathy for positive and negative emotions conveyed by other people ("targets"), completed under social threat. Relative to individuals with normative social anxiety, individuals with elevated social anxiety had greater cognitive empathy and no differences in affective empathy, regardless of emotion type. As greater cognitive empathy can be maladaptive, Study 2 tested whether this could be down-regulated. Individuals with elevated social anxiety underwent emotional working memory training (eWMT) for negative emotional information, or control training (CT). Effects on an empathy measure completed under social threat were assessed. Cognitive empathy for negative emotions decreased following eWMT but not CT, and this was only evident for those with higher pre-training working memory capacity. Cognitive empathy for positive emotions and affective empathy were not affected. Overall, social anxiety is associated with aberrant elevated cognitive empathy for negative and positive emotions, and the deviation in cognitive empathy for negative emotions can be regulated with eWMT for certain individuals.Trial registration: Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry identifier: ACTRN12618001196235..

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) models highlight maladaptive attention as a maintaining factor of SAD, potentially negatively impacting how individuals with SAD engage with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) content in a therapist's presence. Emotional working memory training (eWMT) has been shown to improve affective attentional control. This pilot study assessed the proposed methodology for a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to determine whether eWMT, by improving attentional control prior to internet-based CBT (iCBT), results in better CBT outcomes. The RCT would be considered feasible if the pilot study achieved rates ≥80% for eligible participants recruited, study measures completion, intervention completion, and participant retention. Results from 10 randomized participants showed rates ≥80% for recruitment of eligible participants and iCBT intervention completion. Completion of study measures, eWMT and Placebo training interventions, and participant retention were <80%. Results highlight the need to consider strategies to improve the methodology prior to the RCT.

Cognitive fusion (CF) and experiential avoidance (EA) are two constructs of acceptance and commitment therapy that contribute to psychological distress. The current study aimed to examine whether CF and EA accounted for variance in the relationships between key cognitive maintaining factors of social anxiety and indicators of social anxiety. This issue was investigated using a longitudinal design in a nonclinical sample. Participants (N = 361) completed baseline measures of CF, EA, cognitive maintaining factors, and indicators of social anxiety, and the measures of indicators of social anxiety were recompleted 6 weeks later (N = 262). Results showed that baseline postevent processing had significant indirect effects on fear of negative evaluation at follow-up: (a) via CF, (b) via EA, and (c) via a serial pathway of CF → EA. Interventions that aim to reduce CF, in particular, may be a priority in reducing fear of negative evaluation associated with postevent processing.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is commonly reported by young people and has been shown to contribute to the rapid onset and escalation of depression and suicidal ideation during adolescence. Lonely people may also be particularly susceptible to disengaging from treatment early given the likelihood of their more complex clinical profiles leading to cognitive fatigue. While a smartphone intervention (LifeBuoy) has been shown to effectively reduce suicidal ideation in young adults, poor engagement is a well-documented issue for this therapeutic modality and has been shown to result in poorer treatment outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine whether loneliness affects how young people experiencing suicidal ideation engage with and benefit from a therapeutic smartphone intervention (LifeBuoy). METHODS: A total of 455 community-based Australian young adults (aged 18-25 years) experiencing recent suicidal ideation were randomized to use a dialectical behavioral therapy-based smartphone intervention (LifeBuoy) or an attention-matched control app (LifeBuoy-C) for 6 weeks. Participants completed measures of suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety, and loneliness at baseline (T0), post intervention (T1), and 3 months post intervention (T2). Piecewise linear mixed models were used to examine whether loneliness levels moderated the effect of LifeBuoy and LifeBuoy-C on suicidal ideation and depression across time (T0 to T1; T1 to T2). This statistical method was then used to examine whether app engagement (number of modules completed) influenced the relationship between baseline loneliness and suicidal ideation and depression across time. RESULTS: Loneliness was positively associated with higher levels of overall suicidal ideation (B=0.75, 95% CI 0.08-1.42; P=.03) and depression (B=0.88, 95% CI 0.45-1.32; P<.001), regardless of time point or allocated condition. However, loneliness did not affect suicidal ideation scores across time (time 1: B=1.10, 95% CI -0.25 to 2.46; P=.11; time 2: B=0.43, 95% CI -1.25 to 2.12; P=.61) and depression scores across time (time 1: B=0.00, 95% CI -0.67 to 0.66; P=.99; time 2: B=0.41, 95% CI -0.37 to 1.18; P=.30) in either condition. Similarly, engagement with the LifeBuoy app was not found to moderate the impact of loneliness on suicidal ideation (B=0.00, 95% CI -0.17 to 0.18; P=.98) or depression (B=-0.08, 95% CI -0.19 to 0.03; P=.14). CONCLUSIONS: Loneliness was not found to affect young adults' engagement with a smartphone intervention (LifeBuoy) nor any clinical benefits derived from the intervention. LifeBuoy, in its current form, can effectively engage and treat individuals regardless of how lonely they may be. Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are proposed to be maladaptive ways of thinking and feeling that develop from adverse experiences and basic needs not being met in childhood or adolescence. Once developed, EMSs increase vulnerability to psychopathology. Psychometric evaluations of EMS measures in children are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the English version of the Schema Inventory for Children (SIC) in a community sample of youth aged 8 to 13 years. The SIC and measures of positive and negative automatic thoughts, social phobia symptoms, and depressed mood were administered to participants. Although a correlated 11-factor model was expected for the SIC, the optimal factor structure was a correlated six-factor model. EMS subscales corresponding to these six factors had acceptable internal consistency, and they had positive associations with the measures of negative automatic thoughts, social phobia symptoms, and depressive mood, as well as negative associations with the measure of positive automatic thoughts. These results indicate that EMSs in children may not be as differentiated as they are in adults. The results provide evidence for the reliability and validity of the English version of the SIC, justifying its use in contexts requiring the assessment of EMSs in children.

Social anxiety disorder is maintained in part by rumination about past social experiences, known as post-event processing. The Extended Post-Event Processing Questionnaire (EPEPQ-15) assesses post-event processing as three correlated factors. Competing against this structure is a bifactor model that has not yet been evaluated for the EPEPQ-15. These models were tested for the conventional state version of the EPEPQ-15 and a new trait version in two separate samples (Ns = 327 and 351). In both samples, the fit of the bifactor model was better than that of correlated factor models. Moreover, the results did not support the group factors, indicating that a unidimensional interpretation of the EPEPQ-15 is most appropriate. The general dimension of the EPEPQ-15 was highly correlated with social interaction anxiety, beliefs related to social anxiety, anticipatory processing, and safety behaviors. These results overall suggest post-event processing is best conceptualized as a unitary construct.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders are burdensome illnesses that often go undetected and untreated. Sensor technologies within smartphones may provide an opportunity for identifying the early changes in circadian rhythm and social support/connectedness that signify the onset of a depressive or manic episode. OBJECTIVE: Using smartphone sensor data, this study investigated the relationship between circadian rhythm, which was determined by GPS data, and symptoms of mental health among a clinical sample of adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder. METHODS: A total of 121 participants were recruited from a clinical setting to take part in a 10-week observational study. Self-report questionnaires for mental health outcomes, social support, social connectedness, and quality of life were assessed at 6 time points throughout the study period. Participants consented to passively sharing their smartphone GPS data for the duration of the study. Circadian rhythm (ie, regularity of location changes in a 24-hour rhythm) was extracted from GPS mobility patterns at baseline. RESULTS: Although we found no association between circadian rhythm and mental health functioning at baseline, there was a positive association between circadian rhythm and the size of participants' social support networks at baseline (r=0.22; P=.03; R2=0.049). In participants with bipolar disorder, circadian rhythm was associated with a change in anxiety from baseline; a higher circadian rhythm was associated with an increase in anxiety and a lower circadian rhythm was associated with a decrease in anxiety at time point 5. CONCLUSIONS: Circadian rhythm, which was extracted from smartphone GPS data, was associated with social support and predicted changes in anxiety in a clinical sample of adults with mood disorders. Larger studies are required for further validations. However, smartphone sensing may have the potential to monitor early symptoms of mood disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have examined the relationship between executive functions and performance on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) tasks, such as cognitive restructuring. However, previous studies have used samples of older adults and only traditional measures of executive functions involving non-emotional stimuli. This study extends previous research to examine the specific executive function of shifting with regard to non-emotional and emotional stimuli and its relationship with cognitive restructuring, in a sample of young to middle-aged adults with elevated social anxiety. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Participants (N = 49) completed a standard Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), an emotional version of the WCST (eWCST), and a cognitive restructuring task prior to an impromptu speech task. Per cent perseverative errors (an indicator of shifting) from the WCST and eWCST, along with planned covariates, were used to predict three indicators of cognitive restructuring task performance: task response quality (production of helpful alternative thoughts), change in belief in negative thought, and peak anxiety during speech. RESULTS: As expected, higher per cent perseverative errors (i.e., poorer shifting) on the WCST predicted poorer ability during the cognitive restructuring task to produce helpful alternative thoughts to a negative thought about the impending speech task. However, WCST per cent perseverative errors did not predict the other indicators of cognitive restructuring task performance. eWCST per cent perseverative errors did not predict any of the indicators of cognitive restructuring task performance. CONCLUSIONS: The standard WCST may be sensitive to capturing the type of mental flexibility which is important for producing helpful alternative thinking during cognitive restructuring. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Poorer shifting ability with regard to non-emotional stimuli in clients with elevated social anxiety may be related to poorer ability to produce helpful alternative thoughts during cognitive restructuring. For clinicians whose clients with elevated social anxiety are having difficulty with generating alternative thoughts during cognitive restructuring, clinicians should consider poor shifting ability as a potential contributing factor. Clinicians may need to provide further support for such clients during cognitive restructuring (e.g., greater emphasis on Socratic questioning to better facilitate alternative thinking).

The Self-Beliefs related to Social Anxiety (SBSA) scale assesses maladaptive social-evaluative beliefs, a key aspect in models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) that is frequently measured in research and clinical contexts. The SBSA has been evaluated psychometrically in student samples, but not in a large sample of individuals diagnosed with SAD. The current study tested the psychometric properties of the SBSA in a sample of individuals with SAD pooled from several studies (total N = 284). Results showed that the optimal factor structure for the SBSA was a correlated three-factor model (high standard beliefs factor, conditional beliefs factor, unconditional beliefs factor). The SBSA total and its subscales (formed based on the factors) exhibited good internal consistency. In terms of construct validity, the SBSA total, the high standard beliefs subscale, and conditional beliefs subscale had stronger associations with a measure of social anxiety than with a measure of depression, although the unconditional beliefs subscale was similarly related to both measures of social anxiety and depression. In terms of discriminative validity, the sample of individuals with SAD had higher SBSA total and subscale scores compared with a sample of individuals without SAD (N = 32). These findings provide a psychometric evidence base justifying the use of the SBSA for the assessment of maladaptive social-evaluative beliefs.

This study used a novel theory-informed latent class approach, based on the Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS), to identify subgroups of individuals with a suicide attempt history. The identification of subgroups can inform treatments that target these specific subgroups. Using data from a randomised controlled trial, latent class analysis was conducted on 227 adults with a suicide attempt history. Latent classes were identified based on suicide attempt history, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and capability for suicide at the trial baseline. Three classes were found. Classes 1 and 2 (80% of participants) at baseline had higher interpersonal risks and clinical symptoms, and lower protective psychological factors (e.g., positive reframing), compared to Class 3 (20% of participants). Class 1 had elevated suicidal ideation for the duration of the trial. Classes 1 and 2 also had elevated interpersonal risks relative to a population-based sample. These results suggest that some individuals with a suicide attempt history exhibit relatively low interpersonal risks, and given concurrent protective psychological factors, may be suited to low-intensity interventions. At the other extreme, some individuals with a suicide attempt history require high-intensity interventions addressing interpersonal risks, clinical symptoms, and protective psychological factors.

The integrated aetiological and maintenance (IAM) model of social anxiety disorder (SAD) conceptualises four social-evaluative cognitive processes (anticipatory processing, attention to the self, attention to threat in the environment, and post-event processing) as facets of a social-evaluative threat detection construct. The current study tested this by examining potential factor structures underlying the four social-evaluative cognitive processes. Baseline data from two randomised controlled trials, consisting of 306 participants with SAD who completed measures of the four social-evaluative cognitive processes in relation to a speech task, were subjected to confirmatory factor analysis. Model fit indices and bifactor model indices showed that the optimal factor structure was a bifactor model with a Social-evaluative Threat Detection General Factor and two group factors corresponding to anticipatory processing and post-event processing. Analyses also indicated that the Social-evaluative Threat Detection General Factor had moderate to large associations with other constructs in the IAM model, whereas the two group factors only had small associations with these constructs. These findings suggest that the four social-evaluative cognitive processes can be unified as facets of a social-evaluative threat detection process, consistent with the IAM model, although group factors for anticipatory processing and post-event processing need to be taken into account.

BACKGROUND: Depression frequently first emerges during adolescence, and one in five young people will experience an episode of depression by the age of 18 years. Despite advances in treatment, there has been limited progress in addressing the burden at a population level. Accordingly, there has been growing interest in prevention approaches as an additional pathway to address depression. Depression can be prevented using evidence-based psychological programmes. However, barriers to implementing and accessing these programmes remain, typically reflecting a requirement for delivery by clinical experts and high associated delivery costs. Digital technologies, specifically smartphones, are now considered a key strategy to overcome the barriers inhibiting access to mental health programmes. The Future Proofing Study is a large-scale school-based trial investigating whether cognitive behaviour therapies (CBT) delivered by smartphone application can prevent depression. METHODS: A randomised controlled trial targeting up to 10,000 Year 8 Australian secondary school students will be conducted. In Stage I, schools will be randomised at the cluster level either to receive the CBT intervention app (SPARX) or to a non-active control group comparator. The primary outcome will be symptoms of depression, and secondary outcomes include psychological distress, anxiety and insomnia. At the 12-month follow-up, participants in the intervention arm with elevated depressive symptoms will participate in an individual-level randomised controlled trial (Stage II) and be randomised to receive a second CBT app which targets sleep difficulties (Sleep Ninja) or a control condition. Assessments will occur post intervention (both trial stages) and at 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months post baseline. Primary analyses will use an intention-to-treat approach and compare changes in symptoms from baseline to follow-up relative to the control group using mixed-effect models. DISCUSSION: This is the first trial testing the effectiveness of smartphone apps delivered to school students to prevent depression at scale. Results from this trial will provide much-needed insight into the feasibility of this approach. They stand to inform policy and commission decisions concerning if and how such programmes should be deployed in school-based settings in Australia and beyond. BACKGROUND: Although cognitive-behavioural therapy is the gold standard psychological treatment for individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD), it does not benefit everyone. Emotional working memory training (eWMT) is a promising alternative intervention. This study examined the effects of eWMT versus control training (CT) on emotional and cognitive outcomes in individuals with elevated social anxiety. METHODS: Forty participants with elevated social anxiety were randomly allocated to eWMT (n = 21) or CT (n = 19), each consisting of six training sessions. At pre- and post-training, participants completed: a working memory task, an impromptu speech, and self-reported measures of emotional and cognitive outcomes (anticipatory processing, peak anxiety and attentional focus during the speech, post-event processing). RESULTS: Participants in both training conditions exhibited performance improvements on their respective training tasks. As expected, there was a Time x Condition interaction for peak anxiety, reflecting a decrease in peak anxiety for the eWMT condition but not the CT condition. Exploratory analyses also indicated a Time x Condition interaction for an aspect of post-event processing, reflecting a decrease in thinking about the past for the eWMT condition but not the CT condition. LIMITATIONS: Although the level of social anxiety of the current sample is comparable to that of samples of individuals diagnosed with SAD in the literature, participant diagnoses were not assessed in this study. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that eWMT has potential as an alternative intervention for individuals with elevated social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Limited research has been conducted to quantify the level of disability and health related quality of life (HRQoL) associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviour. The aims of the current study were to (1) describe levels of disability and HRQoL in an Australian sample of adults with suicidal ideation, (2) examine the effect of zero, one, or more than one previous suicide attempt on disability and HRQoL, and (3) describe the demographic and clinical characteristics associated with disability and HRQoL. METHOD: Data for the current study is drawn from the baseline assessment of the Healthy Thinking trial that evaluated the effectiveness of an online self-help program for suicidal thoughts in an Australian adult community sample (n = 418). Measures of disability, quality of life, clinical symptoms, suicidality and demographic variables were included. RESULTS: The mean disability score for the overall sample was 19.2 (SD = =8.9), while the mean perceived physical health score was 40.7 (SD = =6.5) and the mean perceived mental health score was 36.1 (SD = =5.9). Higher levels of disability and lower levels of perceived physical health were associated with multiple suicide attempts compared to one or no history of suicide attempt. LIMITATIONS: Limitations included the limited generalisability of results, the use of self-report to assess suicide attempts, and the use of cross-sectional data. CONCLUSION: Suicidal thoughts and behaviours are associated with high levels disability and low levels of perceived physical and mental health. Early intervention programs are needed to reduce the high levels of burden associated with suicidality.

Existing literature suggests that anticipatory processing and post-event processing-two repetitive thinking processes linked to social anxiety disorder (SAD)-might be better conceptualized as facets of an underlying unidimensional repetitive thinking construct. The current study tested this by examining potential factor structures underlying anticipatory processing and post-event processing. Baseline data from two randomized controlled trials, consisting of 306 participants with SAD who completed anticipatory processing and post-event processing measures in relation to a speech task, were subjected to confirmatory factor analysis. A bifactor model with a General Repetitive Thinking factor and two group factors corresponding to anticipatory processing and post-event processing best fit with the data. Further analyses indicated an optimal model would include only the General Repetitive Thinking factor (reflecting anticipatory processing and a specific aspect of post-event processing) and Post-event Processing group factor (reflecting another specific aspect of post-event processing that is separable), providing evidence against a unidimensional account of repetitive thinking in SAD. Analyses also indicated that the General Repetitive Thinking factor had moderately large associations with social anxiety and life interference (rs = .43 to .47), suggesting its maladaptive nature. The separable Post-event Processing group factor only had small associations with social anxiety (rs = .16 to .27) and was not related to life interference (r = .11), suggesting it may not, in itself, be a maladaptive process. Future research that further characterises the bifactor model components and tests their utility has the potential to improve the conceptualisation and assessment of repetitive thinking in SAD.

BACKGROUND: Cultural factors influence both the expression of social anxiety and the interpretation and functioning of social anxiety measures. This study aimed to test the measurement equivalence of two commonly used social anxiety measures across two sociocultural contexts using individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) from Australia and Japan. METHODS: Scores on the straightforwardly-worded Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (S-SIAS) and the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) from two archival datasets of individual with SAD, one from Australia (n = 201) and one from Japan (n = 295), were analysed for measurement equivalence using a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) framework. RESULTS: The best-fitting factor models for the S-SIAS and SPS were not found to be measurement equivalent across the Australian and Japanese samples. Instead, only a subset of items was invariant. When this subset of invariant items was used to compare social anxiety symptoms across the Australian and Japanese samples, Japanese participants reported lower levels of fear of attracting attention, and similar levels of fear of overt evaluation, and social interaction anxiety, relative to Australian participants. LIMITATIONS: We only analysed the measurement equivalence of two social anxiety measures using a specific operationalisation of culture. Future studies will need to examine the measurement equivalence of other measures of social anxiety across other operationalisations of culture. CONCLUSIONS: When comparing social anxiety symptoms across Australian and Japanese cultures, only scores from measurement equivalent items of social anxiety measures should be used. Our study highlights the importance of culturally-informed assessment in SAD.

Recent research has started to examine the applicability of influential adult models of the maintenance of social anxiety disorder (SAD) to youth. This research is limited by the lack of psychometrically validated measures of underlying constructs that are developmentally appropriate for youth. One key construct in adult models of SAD is maladaptive social-evaluative beliefs. The current study aimed to develop and validate a measure of these beliefs in youth, known as the Report of Youth Social Cognitions (RYSC). The RYSC was developed with a clinical sample of youth with anxiety disorders (N = 180) and cross-validated in a community sample of youth (N = 305). In the clinical sample, the RYSC exhibited a 3-factor structure (negative evaluation, revealing self, and positive impression factors), good internal consistency, and construct validity. In the community sample, the 3-factor structure and the internal consistency of the RYSC were replicated, but the test of construct validity showed that the RYSC had similarly strong associations with social anxiety and depressed affect. The RYSC had good test-retest reliability overall, although the revealing self subscale showed lower temporal stability which improved when only older participants were considered (age ≥9 years). The RYSC in general was also shown to discriminate between youth with and without SAD although the revealing self subscale again performed suboptimally but improved when only older participants were considered. These findings provide psychometric support for the RYSC and justifies its use with youth in research and clinical settings requiring the assessment of maladaptive social-evaluative beliefs. Anticipatory processing, maladaptive attentional focus, and postevent processing are key cognitive constructs implicated in the maintenance of social anxiety disorder (SAD). The current study examined how treatment for SAD concurrently affects these three cognitive maintaining processes and how these processes are associated with each other as well as with symptom change from pre- to posttreatment. The sample consisted of 116 participants with SAD receiving group cognitive behavioral therapy. All three cognitive maintaining processes were measured relative to a speech task and again relative to a conversation task. Across both tasks, the three cognitive process variables demonstrated decreases from pre- to posttreatment. Within the same task, a slower rate of decrease in a specific cognitive process variable from pre- to posttreatment was predicted from higher pretreatment levels of either one or both of the other cognitive process variables. Additionally, higher levels of pretreatment conversation-related anticipatory processing and maladaptive attentional focus predicted a slower rate of decrease in social anxiety symptoms from pre- to posttreatment. Results are consistent with cognitive models of SAD and have important implications for enhancing existing treatments.

PURPOSE: Stuttering is a speech disorder frequently accompanied by anxiety in social-evaluative situations. A growing body of research has confirmed a significant rate of social anxiety disorder among adults who stutter. Social anxiety disorder is a chronic and disabling anxiety disorder associated with substantial life impairment. Several influential models have described cognitive-behavioral factors that contribute to the maintenance of social anxiety in nonstuttering populations. The purpose of the present article is to apply these leading models to the experience of social anxiety for people who stutter. METHOD: Components from existing models were applied to stuttering in order to determine cognitive-behavioral processes that occur before, during, and after social-evaluative situations, which may increase the likelihood of stuttering-related social fears persisting. RESULTS: Maintenance of social anxiety in stuttering may be influenced by a host of interrelated factors, including fear of negative evaluation, negative social-evaluative cognitions, attentional biases, self-focused attention, safety behaviors, and anticipatory and postevent processing. CONCLUSION: Given the chronic nature of social anxiety disorder, identifying factors that contribute to the persistence of stuttering-related social fears has the potential to inform clinical practice and the development of psychological treatment programs to address the speech and psychological needs of people who stutter with social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Prominent cognitive models of social anxiety have consistently emphasised the importance of beliefs about the self in the aetiology and maintenance of social anxiety. The present study sought to develop and validate a new measure of core beliefs about the self for SAD, the Core Beliefs Questionnaire (CBQ). METHODS: Three versions of the CBQ were developed: a Trait version (fundamental absolute statements about the self), a Contingent version (statements about the self related to a specific social-evaluative situation), and an Other version (statements about how others view the self in social-evaluative situations generally). The psychometric features of the scales were examined in clinical (n=269) and non-clinical (n=67) samples. RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis yielded a one factor model for all three versions of the questionnaire. Total scores differentiated individuals with SAD from individuals without a psychiatric condition, and demonstrated excellent internal consistency. The three CBQ versions had positive associations with social anxiety while controlling for depression, although zero-order correlations indicated the Trait version was more strongly related to depression than social anxiety, the Contingent version was similarly related to depression and social anxiety, and the Other version was more strongly related to social anxiety than depression. Scores on all three versions of the CBQ reduced from pre- to post-treatment and this change predicted treatment outcome. LIMITATIONS: This is the first validation study of the CBQ. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides initial support for the reliability and validity of the CBQ.
